Virtual Reality in Education

One of my personal passions is the use of virtual reality in education. I strongly believe that virtual reality represents one of the most powerful tools for training and learning.

As humans, we naturally learn best in a 3D environment. We live in a three-dimensional world where we move, interact, touch objects, and explore spaces. Traditional learning environments such as books, television, and computer screens are fundamentally 2D, which requires learners to abstract and translate information into a non-physical format.

In contrast, virtual reality allows us to learn through direct experience in a simulated 3D environment.

When something is experienced in true 3D, learning becomes more intuitive, engaging, and memorable. In simple terms, practical, hands-on learning has always been one of the most effective methods of education. High-end virtual reality now makes it possible to simulate that kind of learning at scale.

Virtual Reality Education Game Development

We were commissioned to develop a virtual reality education game for an online education platform within a very short timeframe. The original developer had withdrawn from the project, and several mall events across the country had already been scheduled.

We were brought in at the last moment to complete and deliver the solution.

Below is a video from one of the activation events held at Gateway Mall in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. It demonstrates the virtual reality education experience and the response from participants.

The response from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Children as young as six years old, as well as adults, were able to engage with and enjoy the experience.

Many participants had never experienced virtual reality before and had also never performed the copper sulfate and iron science experiment in real life. In the virtual reality education game, they were guided step-by-step through the experiment in an immersive environment.

The Impact of Virtual Reality in Education

During the national tour where we activated the experience on behalf of the client, we consistently received strong feedback from both learners and educators.

At the Africacom exhibition in Cape Town, we also demonstrated the experience to media and children of various ages. Participants were able to complete the virtual science experiment in VR and then repeat the same experiment using real laboratory equipment.

The results were remarkable — in all cases, students were able to successfully complete the real-world experiment without additional guidance after first experiencing it in virtual reality.

This reinforced my belief in the power of virtual reality as a training and education tool.
